Spelling Games

Run and Write Relay Race: The students are split into 2 teams and the teacher says a word for them to spell. The first student of each team runs to the board and writes the 1st letter of the word and passes the pen to the next member who repeats the process with the next letter.

Whiteboard pass: Students are with a partner sitting about 5 feet apart from each other with a whiteboard (on the floor). Teacher says a word for the students to spell and they take turns passing the whiteboard back & forth while writing a letter each turn.

Spelling Bee: Have all your Ss stand at the front of the class. Give S1 a word to spell. The S orally spells the word and the T writes it on the board as it is being spelled. If the spelling is wrong the S is knocked out of the game. The last S standing is the winner.

Unscramble: Write a word on the board that has all its letters mixed up. Students compete to unscramble the word. This works well in a team game.

Vocab Tic Tac Toe: Draw a basic tic tac toe board on the white board with new vocabulary in each block. Each word is missing one, two or three letters. One S from each team is called up and must fill in the missing letter(s) and say the word aloud. The team with three in a row wins.

Balloon Toss: Teacher says a word to spell. Two students work together to keep the balloon up while spelling the word correctly. If the balloon drops they have to start over.

Hangman: For younger learners: Young children who are still learning the alphabet and word recognition can play this game. Write the word on the board, underline each letter then rub out the word. Students have to recreate the word. OR for older students: Dashes are drawn across the board (one for each letter of a word). The students try and guess which letters are in the word. If the student guesses correctly the letter is placed over the dash. If the student guesses incorrectly then one stroke of the hangman's gallows is drawn and the letter is noted on the board.
