What is Peace Corps?

“If you choose to accept this invitation you will be embarking on the experience of a lifetime.  Leaving your friends and families behind, you will enter a foreign culture and be forced to communicate in languages with which you are most likely unfamiliar. You will be frustrated and challenged in multiple ways, and you will persevere. You will get sick, and you will recover. You will arrive in a new community with little more than the clothes on your back , and you will survive. You will conquer your own misgivings and the pessimism of others, and you will learn that you can do anything you set your mind to. You will make new friends of all ages and from all walks of life, and form new family ties within your community and within the Peace Corps. You will turn failures into victories, and the victories will be numerous. You will learn as much about yourself as you will learn about others.

Peace Corps, "the toughest job you'll love."
In 1961, John F. Kennedy created Peace Corps with the objective of promoting world peace and friendship. Now, there are volunteers in over 130 countries in the world, focusing on areas of work such as: education, health, youth development, environment, agriculture, etc.

Peace Corps is a 27 month commitment, and for good reason. Trusts and friendships, especially with people of a completely different culture, take time. It took me about 4 months until everyone stopped calling me gringa, 6 months to feel comfortable with the language, 9 months to start a big project, and certainly well over a year to start seeing any type of changes & really feel part of the community.

Test your wings and see if you can fly. It's never too late to become a Peace Corps Volunteer. It is a great way to give back and continue growing, even at age 80! All you need is a good back, strong stomach, level head, and a big heart.

(This is a way you can donate to projects of Peace Corps Volunteers from all over the world. Because of this I was able to provide my school with 14 computers. Thanks again to all of my donors!)
